Mpumalanga - the place of the rising sun - is a subtropical garden of delights. Descending from the Drakensberg escarpment in the west it is bounded by the Kruger National Park, Swaziland and Mozambique. Known for its unbeatable scenic beauty the wildlife, birds and plant life are truly representative of Africa and attractions include game-viewing, scenic drives, historical sites and world class golf courses. A drive along the Panorama Route - a 70 kilometre long circular drive - provides mind expanding views of some of Africa’s most beautiful terrain. Take a peek out of God’s Window - a 600 metre high viewpoint on the edge of an escarpment - which offers magnificent views of the Blyde River Canyon and the Lowveld, or stare in wonder at the Pinnacle - a towering 30 metre high column of granite rising up from the dense indigenous forest.
The Blyde River Canyon is the third largest green canyon in the world and probably the most beautiful. Stretching for 60 kilometres it is filled with lush vegetation and wildlife and is an absolute treat to the senses.The Mpumalanga Highlands are South Africa’s foremost trout fishing destination where clear mountain rivers, running through breathtaking surroundings, yield a bite at every cast. While in the Highlands, a visit to the Sudwala Caves to view the huge dolomite chambers and listen to their eerily perfect acoustics are an interesting day trip.
Pilgrim’s Rest is a beautifully restored gold mining town well worth a visit. This national monument is an ideal romantic hideaway so take some time to explore the ways of our forefathers while you recharge your batteries.
