VICTORIA FALLS

Victoria Falls in Zambia

Steadily growing in stature since the opening of its first major international hotel resort a few years ago, Livingstone has become a huge drawcard for both Zambia and the falls. Hotel and Lodge accommodation nestle cheek by jowl along the banks of the Zambezi, bringing revenue in the form of foreign currency to this once sleepy colonial ghost town.
Restaurants, bars and nightclubs line the falls road and, in the town where wild elephant still have right of way, activities abound. This is adventure country, with helicopter flips, microlighting, abseiling and generally falling off large chunks of rock the order of the day. You can fly, Superman-style across the abyss of Batoka Gorge or put your life, and faith, into a few centimetres of threaded cable as you plummet at maximum velocity towards the canyon floor, before being swung slowly, pendulum style, out of harm's way. This is the death-defying gorge swing. Or try out Angel's Armchair - a tiny rock pool on the edge of the falls where you can swim safely while the full force of the Zambezi plunges past you only metres away.

On a more gentle note, there are a variety of activities to suit calmer, perhaps more mature tastes - a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, a visit to the Livingstone Museum or a cultural tour to Mkuni Village.
