WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LAND AND WATER BASED CAMPS?

When referring to Okavango Delta lodges, we have indicated if these lodges are water-based, land-based or a combination of water and land-based. The flood waters from the Okavango originate from the Kavango River in the north, and dry up as the water moves south. The result is that camps located in the permanent waterways offer only water-based activities, while those in the south tend to offer only land-based activities, and those centrally located provide a combination of both land and water-based activities. Water flow is seasonal, so activities may vary according to the season of travel.

  • Water based lodge activities: Mokoro rides, boat excursions, game walks and possible fishing activities are available all year round.
  • Land based lodge activities: Day and night game drive and game walks.

TOP OKAVANGO DELTA EXPERIENCES

  • The mokoro is a dugout canoe that moves silently through the shallow waterways and channels. Your guide stands on the stern of the mokoro and uses a pole to propel you. Excellent game viewing is available, as the mokoro's silence allows you to remain largely undetected by the wildlife, and is available to all camps that have access to water.
  • Provided that the delta is dry enough, walking safaris give the guests the opportunity to explore the delta on foot. Accompanied by an armed guide, visitors will encounter a variety of wildlife.
  • An ideal setting for Elephant Back Safaris, guests have the option exploring the Delta on short excursions or day long adventures on the back of an elephant. If your pocket allows, try Abu Camp for elephant back safaris or Macatoo Lodge for horse back safaris in the Delta.
  • With over 80 different species (including bream, tiger Fish and catfish) fishing in the Okavango Delta can be a rewarding experience. Although fishing is available anywhere, many prefer the deeper waters of the northern regions.

LUGGAGE RESTRICTIONS WHEN TRAVELLING BY AIRCRAFT WITHIN THE OKAVANGO DELTA

When traveling by light aircraft in the Delta, a 12kg luggage limit in soft bags is imposed. Luggage over the 12 kg will be left in lockers at the airport and will for collection on your return. The 12kg limit does not include photographic equipment or hand luggage, which needs to be of a reasonable size.
